A female wild elephant rescued by the Forest Department from Kuppanur village near Coimbatore on January 25, 2026 was found dead on February 3, 2026 (Tuesday).
The carcass of the elephant, aged around 50, was found near the boundary of Boluvampatti block-I reserve forest, within the jurisdiction of the Madukkarai forest range.
According to the Forest Department, the carcass did not have any external injury. A team of veterinarians performed the post-mortem examination on the carcass on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of District Forest Officer, staff from Madukkarai range, village administrative officer and representatives from different non-governmental organisations.
The Department had rescued the elephant after it was found trapped in a muddy patch, next to a construction workers’ shed, on a private land at Kuppanur on January 25. Veterinarians treated the elephant after rescuing it from the mud using earthmovers. The elephant’s condition improved after the treatment and food provided by the Department, and it walked into the forest the next morning.
The elephant was under the watch of frontline staff of the Department from January 26 and it was found dead on Tuesday.
