The Chennai police have registered one more case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against Gem Granites chairman R. Veeramani.
The case was registered after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) established a prima facie offence in a complaint lodged by a woman, alleging she was sexually abused by Mr. Veeramani when she was a minor, police sources told The Hindu on Sunday (October 11, 2026).
This is the fifth case under the POCSO Act against the octogenarian, who has also been booked in a case of abetment of suicide involving a minor in 2004, the sources said.
Investigators will take custody of Mr. Veeramani in the second POCSO Act case soon. He was examined by the police in the first case, in which video evidence was available and the complainant, who had remained unidentified for a long time, was identified by the police.
“We have filed a request in the designated court requesting custody of the accused for questioning in another case,” a senior police officer said.
Mr. Veeramani and his associates were arrested in the first case and lodged in Puzhal central prison. They were later detained under the Goondas Act. The accused would be formally arrested in all other cases, the sources said.
