Sivaganga police have arrested five persons in connection with the recent murder of two men in the district.
Police said Deyvendiran, 25, was from Kayaodai Pudukudiyiruppu near Kalaiyarkovil in Sivaganga district. He ran a bar at Pollachi in Coimbatore district. Having come to his hometown, he bought a new car. Two days ago, he and Poovandi, 25, from Siruvelangudi, who worked at a private financial institution, went to Kodikkad kanmai (tank) near Sivaganga in the car. They sat near the tank and consumed alcohol.
An eight-member gang arrived on two-wheelers and chased the two men. The gang members hacked them to death and damaged Deyvendiran’s car before fleeing the scene. Sivaganga Town police registered a case.
Based on the orders of District Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta, five special teams led by DSP Amal Edwin were formed. Based on CCTV camera footage and cell tower data, the special teams arrested five persons in connection with the murder. They were identified as Balamurugan, 24, Dhanaraj, 19, and Santhosh, 19, all from Billur near Sivaganga, Sathishkumar, 25, from Mathur and Kaleeswaran, 23, from Alupillai Thangi.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the victims staged a road blockade in front of Sivaganga Palace, refusing to receive the bodies and demanded the arrest of the real culprits, a compensation of ₹50 lakh each to the families of the deceased, and government jobs for family members of the victims.
Since the blockade lasted for over three hours, buses were diverted. Though police held talks with them, they refused to accept the body.
Relatives of the deceased said that some people had come for a function. They sat and consumed alcohol at the spot where the murder took place. A clash broke out among them at the time. Those who were attacked brought their supporters. By then, the attackers had left. At the moment, the two deceased individuals were consuming alcohol
“Seeing a gang heading towards them, both tried to run. That gang chased and hacked them to death. This is what they state for the reason of murder,” they added.
“However, that is not believable. How could both be killed simultaneously in a case of mistaken identity? Therefore, we plan to continue our protest until the real culprits are arrested.” they said.
Police said they were continuing the investigation and the motive could be established only after arresting the key culprits.
