The Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Act here on Friday convicted and sentenced a former police head constable Ramasamy to undergo three years imprisonment in a bribery case. The case dates back to June 2009 when Ramasamy had served as the head constable in Boiler Plant police station in Tiruchi district.
The charge against him was that he falsely claimed to M. Gunasekaran of Tiruverumbur, who ran a finance firm, that there was an arrest warrant issued against him from Delhi. Ramasamy had demanded ₹10,000 as bribe from Gunasekaran on June 12, 2009 to not arrest him.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, Gunasekaran complained to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC), Tiruchi, on June 13, 2009 and a case was registered. A trap was laid and a DVAC team arrested Ramaswamy when he took ₹10,000, a DVAC press release said.
The trial in this case was held in the Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Act here. Meanwhile, Ramaswamy was dismissed from service and Gunasekaran died in February 2019 after giving evidence.
