The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Vriddhachalam in Tiruchi Division has apprehended four boys in connection with the stone throwing on the Chennai Egmore-Tirunelveli Vande Bharat Express on Sunday evening which caused damage to the glass windows of six coaches. The incident was reported between Vriddhachalam and Talanallur railway stations.
Preliminary inquiry had revealed that a group of boys which was walking alongside the track had thrown stones at the train causing damage to the glass windows of coaches C5, C6, C7, E2 and C18. There were no injuries to any passenger as ascertained by the inspection of the coaches and interaction with passengers by the railway officials at Tiruchi railway junction.
The RPF pursued the culprits in nearby villages and apprehended four boys who were later sent to a juvenile home, said a press release from the Chief Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway M. Senthamil Selvan on Monday. Stone pelting on trains is a criminal offence under Sections 153 and 154 of the Railway Act, 1989.
In addition to stepping up vigil, the RPF was organising awareness drives at locations of such incidents as well as in the nearby areas, including schools and villages, to discourage miscreants from indulging in acts that endanger the safety of train operations, the release added.
