A 22-year-old young man from Vizianagaram has realised his long-cherished dream of soaring high in the skies and serving the nation by becoming a fighter jet pilot. Hailing from a middle-class background, K.S.V.T. Tejesh’s inspiring journey to earning the prestigious rank of Flying Officer has been defined by unwavering determination, consistent hard work, and deep dedication to the country.
Tejesh’s father, Shiva Narayana, had once nurtured a strong desire to serve in the Army during his younger days. However, circumstances in life led him to settle into a private-sector job instead. Even though his own dream remained unfulfilled, the aspiration to serve the Nation stayed close to his heart.
“During my official work visits to Sainik School, Korukonda, I noticed how disciplined and well-mannered the students were. I felt that parents whose children study in such an institution must feel extremely proud. That is when I decided that I should try to get my son admitted there. Tejesh worked relentlessly, day and night, and finally secured a merit seat,” Mr. Shiva Narayana recalled.
Tejesh, however, says that he never felt any pressure from his family to achieve something extraordinary in life. “Once I joined Sainik School, the teachers, seniors, and officers inspired me immensely. Their discipline, the way they spoke, and the manner in which they handled responsibilities planted a strong idea in my mind, to do something meaningful for the country,” he said.
In 2021, Tejesh appeared for the UPSC examination and secured an impressive All India Rank of 127. The following year, he joined the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA Khadakwasla, Pune, marking a major milestone in his journey.
“Initially, the training was extremely demanding, both physically and mentally. It was very tough. Slowly, I understood that the purpose was to prepare us to become mentally strong and resilient. The training is designed to suit all three forces, the Army, Air Force, and Navy. In the final terms, service-specific training is provided. Alongside this rigorous schedule, I also completed my B.Tech degree,” Tejesh explained.
Tejesh shared that initial flying training was conducted at the Air Force Academy, followed by training at various Air Force Stations.
“We were taught the basic flying techniques for both fighter aircraft and helicopters. The training was extremely critical, as even a small mistake could lead to a tragedy. The instructors were extremely strict, and the training was quite harsh, but it made us more disciplined and focused,” he added.
In Hyderabad and Pune, Tejesh underwent flying training on the Pilatus PC-7 aircraft, followed by advanced jet training on the Kiran Mk-1 aircraft.
The commissioning ceremony held on December 13 turned out to be an unforgettable moment for Tejesh and his family, a day that will remain etched in their memories forever.
Tejesh is now set to head to Kalaikunda in West Bengal, where he will undergo further training to operate Hawk fighter aircraft starting December 28.
Describing his first solo sortie, Tejesh said, “It was a truly beautiful feeling. I had flown earlier as a passenger, which gives you only a secondary perspective. But sitting in the cockpit, with complete control in my hands, flying at an average altitude of 15,000 feet and a speed of over 180 knots, was an incredible experience”
Tejesh stated that his sole aim is to serve the Nation with full commitment, remain prepared for any mission assigned to him, and give his very best to the Indian Air Force at all times. He also credited his parents for their immense sacrifices, emotional strength, and constant motivation, which he believes played a crucial role in shaping his success.
“When he was awarded the badge, tears rolled down my eyes. I carried him on my shoulders, and it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I have witnessed his hard work and dedication over the years,” Mr. Surya Narayana said, expressing his joy and pride in his son’s remarkable achievement.
