The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Saturday accused the NDA government of gross financial indiscipline and lack of accountability in managing public finances.

Addressing the media, party spokesperson P. Sivashankar alleged that the government pushed the State into a debt trap through “reckless borrowing and extravagant spending.”

In 18 months, the TDP-led government had borrowed ₹2.80 lakh crore at 9.15% interest, in “violation of the RBI norms,” he alleged. “In contrast, the YSRCP government had borrowed ₹3.72 lakh crore during its term, of which ₹2.73 lakh crore was disbursed to the beneficiaries of welfare schemes,” he claimed.

The government failed to implement its Super Six promises, he alleged, and wondered where the borrowed funds had gone.

Alleging rampant corruption, Mr. Sivashankar said resources such as sand and land were being exploited. “Pledging of advance revenues of the Mining and Beverages corporations and granting treasury access to private players is a dangerous financial practice,” he said.

Mr. Sivashankar said despite the COVID-19 crisis, the YSRCP government had prioritised welfare and farmers’ interests, unlike the present dispensation.

Farmers’ issue

Meanwhile, YSRCP coordinator for Mangalagiri constituency D. Vema Reddy accused the government of failing to do justice to the farmers who had given land for Amaravati. Addressing the media at Tadepalli on Friday, he alleged that the government was misleading the farmers through “sham gram sabhas.”

The Amaravati farmers were yet to receive the plots assured to them, he said. He expressed anguish over the death of a farmer, Rama Rao, due to heart attack “after he was allotted a plot in a water channel instead of a viable alternative.” The incident reflected the government’s “insensitive approach” towards farmers, he charged.

He questioned the government’s sincerity in addressing unresolved issues, especially when it was keen on acquiring more land.
