The headmistress of a Government Tribal Residential School near Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore district has been placed under suspension following an inquiry into an incident in which a Class V student was allegedly beaten with a stick.
Krishna Priya, headmistress of the school at Kunjurpathi near Palamalai, allegedly beat the student on her back with a stick about a month ago after she came to school without completing her homework. The student sustained injuries in the incident.
The school, run by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, has 43 students and six teachers, including the HM. The student’s parents reportedly questioned the headmistress after learning about the incident. She is said to have told them that the incident had occurred inadvertently.
The matter came to the attention of the authorities after photographs of the injured student were circulated. Photographs of girl students cleaning the school’s toilet were also circulated. Education Department officials subsequently conducted an inquiry into the complaints.
Students had reportedly sought the transfer of the headmistress. Following the inquiry into the incident, the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department on Friday ordered her suspension.
