Members from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has alleged that the NDA government is attempting to weaken decades-old cooperative sugar factories in Anakapalli district and dispose of their valuable assets under the guise of liquidation.
Addressing a press conference at the party office here on Friday, former Deputy Chief Minister Budi Mutyala Naidu, former Minister Gudivada Amarnath, alleged that the State Government to allegedly trying to liquidate cooperative sugar factories at Etikoppaka, Tandava and Tummapala, and transfer their lands and other assets to the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC).
They alleged that the government was taking unilateral decisions without consulting thousands of farmers, who were shareholders and members of the cooperative factories. They also questioned how the future of the factories could be decided without convening general body meetings and obtaining the views of the shareholders.
They alleged that the government was seeking to sell the factories assets to clear outstanding debts and subsequently make the valuable lands available to its supporters and associates at cheaper prices. They also questioned the purpose of constituting a four-member Group of Ministers, if the government had already made up its mind.
“The YSRCP will not remain quiet, if the government attempts to take away land and assets belonging to farmers. The party would extend legal and political support to them,” the YSRCP leaders said.
Mr Amarnath stated that during the previous YSRCP government, headed by former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, had provided financial assistance to cooperative sugar factories and their farmers, releasing around Rs 90 crore over five years. He demanded that the government immediately release nearly Rs 35 crore due to farmers and workers associated with the Govada Sugar Factory, which they said had been pending for about two years.
“We have set a deadline of September 20 to the government to clear the pending dues, convene general body meetings and announce a clear policy on the future of the cooperative sugar factories. If the government fails to respond, the YSRCP would organise large-scale general body meetings with farmers and intensify its agitation,” YSRCP leaders warned.
