The Delhi Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved the construction of a 250-bed super-speciality-cum-trauma block in Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Dilshad Garden under the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the Chief Minster’s Office stated in a release on Wednesday.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday.
The new block, to be built within the hospital campus, is estimated to cost ₹244.87 crore and is expected to be completed by 2028, the release added.
PMSSY is a central government scheme aimed at modernising and improving medical facilities at government hospitals through a cost-sharing partnership between the Centre and States.
Heavy patient load
“GTB Hospital is the only major government hospital in east Delhi and continues to face a heavy patient load. Almost all its beds remain occupied. In view of this, there was a need to expand modern trauma facilities for accident victims and critical emergency cases,” Ms. Gupta said.
“The Delhi government aims to expand the capacity of government hospitals while ensuring that people receive better and timely medical care when they need it,” the CMO stated.
The latest development follows the Delhi government’s decision in March this year to merge GTB Hospital, the Delhi State Cancer Institute, and the Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital into an autonomous institution on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
New block
Spread over 22,550 square metres, the new seven-storeyed facility will comprise a basement, ground floor, and six upper floors. It will have 250 beds, 48 specialist OPD rooms and nine modern operation theatres. The basement will house a blood bank and laboratory, the CMO stated. The ground floor will have a 24×7 emergency department along with diagnostic facilities such as CT scan, MRI and X-ray.
A 72-bed ICU will be located on the second floor, while the fourth and fifth floors will have 175 general and private ward beds. The sixth floor will house offices, classrooms, and a laboratory for the training of doctors.
The facility will offer various specialist services, including neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care. A total of 77 critical-care beds will be available for critically ill patients.
Emergency care
The CM said that timely treatment is crucial in serious accident cases, and the new block will bring together all essential facilities, from 24×7 emergency care and diagnostics to intensive care and surgery. This will expand east Delhi’s capacity to treat critical accident and emergency cases, she added.
A committee comprising senior officials from the Central and Delhi governments will be constituted to monitor the project. The committee will meet every three months to review the progress of construction.
