The recent announcements of a raise of ₹5,000 by the State government to the consolidated monthly pay of guest lecturers (GLs) and implementation of Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) with financial benefits from September have earned the appreciation of the teaching community.

“We welcome the new government’s decision to raise our salary, as a total of 9,646 GLs will benefit from it. However, we also urge the authorities to consider fixing GLs’ salary at ₹50,000 as per an earlier recommendation of the University Grants Commission. Additionally, we would like our salaries to be paid for 12 months of work, instead of the 11 months that is a norm now,”  V. Thangaraj, state president, Tamil Nadu All Government College UGC Qualified Guest Lecturers Association, told The Hindu on Thursday.

According to the new initiative, GLs in government arts and science and engineering colleges will now earn a monthly salary of ₹35,000 (up from ₹30,000) while those working in polytechnic colleges will get ₹30,000 (up from ₹25,000).

The pay raise was announced as part of the Department of Higher Education’s 2026-2027 demands for grants in the Assembly earlier this week.

The session also saw the announcement to implement the Career Advancement Scheme with financial benefits from September 1.

Mr. Thangaraj said the move would be a relief to many GLs working on consolidated pay.
