The main accused in the Gurugram hit-and-run case, Kalyan Bainsla, was returning from a party with his three friends when he chased a woman biker for 2 km on Golf Course Road before hitting her motorcycle, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) sources said on Thursday.
According to the SIT, Mr. Kalyan, who was driving the car, and his three friends had been at Empire Club Bar and Lounge in Sector 25 between midnight and 5 a.m. on the intervening night of September 13 and 14, the sources said. His friend, Mr. Lavnish, was seated in the passenger seat at the time of the incident.
The investigation revealed that the first interaction between the occupants of the car and the biker, Shivani Chauhan, who identifies herself as Sia on social media, took place near Sector 53 Metro station. Following a brief altercation, Mr. Lavnish instigated Mr. Kalyan to chase the biker, following which the car pursued her for around 1.5 to 2 km before hitting her two-wheeler, the sources said. The collision threw her off the two-wheeler and she suffered injuries to her knees.
Mr. Kalyan and Mr. Lavnish were nabbed from Rajasthan on September 15. The police had initially registered a case under provisions related to rash driving and endangering life. However, following a complaint by Ms. Chauhan, the police added charges of attempt to murder, physical and digital stalking, and outraging the modesty of a woman to the FIR. Both accused were sent to two days’ police custody on Wednesday. The next hearing is scheduled for September 18.
The sequence of events remains the central focus of the investigation. While Ms. Chauhan has alleged that the occupants of the car were intoxicated and deliberately chased and hit her, Mr. Kalyan has denied the charges and said that the collision was an accident.
The five-member SIT investigating the case has also served notices to the two other occupants of the car. Their statements will be recorded to determine if their arrests are required. Additionally, investigators have sought CCTV footage from the club, and the blood and urine samples of the accused have been sent for forensic examination, sources said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Chauhan stated that the arrest of only two men is not enough and demanded action against everyone involved.
“All four men should be arrested and given the strictest possible punishment, and an example should be set so that in the future, any man, whether in a car or on a bike, thinks ten times before harassing any girl,” she said.
