Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, along with Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat and Visakhapatnam (East) MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, inspected the Horse Park area in Mudasarlova Park here on Wednesday. The visit followed the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC)’s decision to cancel the Horse Park tenders.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that the tenders were cancelled as the agreement had been drawn up under a flawed policy introduced by the previous government. He said the council had decided to re-invite tenders and develop the park in a transparent and inclusive manner for the benefit of all sections of the public.
Clarifying the Telugu Desam Party’s stand, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party was not opposed to establishing the Horse Park but objected to the irregular tendering process followed earlier. Under the previous policy, GVMC was required to bear all operational costs — including the purchase of horses, fodder, shed maintenance, electricity bills, and caretaker expenses — while the operator had to pay only ₹3,000 per month to GVMC. The Mayor termed the arrangement “inappropriate” and said the re-tendering process would ensure the park’s development into a pleasant, public-friendly space.
Mr. Ramakrishna Babu said plans were being prepared to further develop Mudasarlova Park and set up a skating park for children.
GVMC Chief Engineer Satyanarayana Raju, Zonal Commissioner Shivaprasad, and other officials were present.
