Senior leader of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and its Deputy Floor Leader in the Assembly T. Harish Rao alleged that the State government is staying a mute spectator while the prices of essential commodities, including the widely grown rice, were skyrocketing.
In a statement, he said on Monday that the price of fine quality rice has increased over 25% during the last four months despite the government repeatedly claiming that paddy has been produced at a record level during 2025-26. Instead of prices coming down with ample production, they are on the rise unabatedly.
He questioned the claims of the government’s supply of fine rice through the public distribution system (ration card).
Not only rice, but the prices of onion (₹70 a kg), garlic (₹240), groundnut oil (₹210), greengram dal (₹125), redgram dal (₹165) and others have also increased rapidly in the recent months.
He demanded that the government hold a review on the price rise and take measures to control them by preventing hoarding.
