Dindigul district received moderate to heavy rainfall, while Theni district received light to moderate rainfall on Monday and Tuesday. One person, Sonu Ramkond (25) from Odisha, was killed in a lightning strike at Silvarpatti near Reddiarchatram in Dindigul district.
Dindigul district recorded a total rainfall of 428.30 mm. Dindigul and Natham recorded heavy rainfall, while other parts of the district received moderate rainfall. Nilakottai recorded light rainfall.
Dindigul recorded 84.10 mm, Dindigul West 43.70 mm, Natham 70.50 mm, Nilakottai 10 mm, Oddanchatram 27.60 mm, Vedasandur Taluk Office 59 mm, Vedasandur Tobacco Research Station 54 mm, Palani 24 mm, Kodaikanal Rose Garden 32 mm and Bryant Park 23.40 mm.
Theni district recorded a total rainfall of 182.4 mm, with light to moderate rainfall reported across the district. Andipatti recorded 5.2 mm, Theni 19.4 mm, Periyakulam 17 mm, Vaigai dam 31.2 mm, Bodinayakannur 23.6 mm and Uthamapalayam 5.5 mm.
The rain brought much-needed relief to the people of Dindigul district, particularly farmers, who had highlighted the water crisis in the region due to the lack of rainfall at various meetings, including the farmers’ grievance redress meeting. The water crisis was also raised at the Corporation Council meeting. Farmers had urged that Dindigul district be declared drought-hit.
Heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday left several streets inundated. Office-goers and students were affected due to waterlogging.
Following rainfall in Kodaikanal and surrounding areas, water began flowing into the Kumbakkarai waterfalls after a gap of several months. Forest Department officials said tourists would be permitted after assessing the water flow.
Access to the waterfalls had been restricted due to a lack of rainfall. After remaining closed for months, the waterfalls saw a surge in water flow following the rains in Kodaikanal and surrounding areas. Forest Department officials said tourists would be allowed subject to the water flow remaining steady.
