The ruling Congress has retained both the Davangere South and Bagalkot assembly constituencies in Karnataka, the byelections of which had witnessed intense campaigning with Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Union Ministers and a host of senior leaders of Congress, BJP and JD(S) actively involving themselves in it.

The byelections were necessitated by the demise of former ministers H.Y. Meti and Shamanur Shivashankarappa. While Umesh meti, son of Mr. Meti has succeeded him by winning the bypoll, the Davanagere South seat has remained with the Samanur family with the victory of Shivashankarappa’s grandson Samarth Shamanur Mallikarjun.
