The seizure of 609 grams of suspected heroin worth around ₹1 crore from Angamaly on Monday (May 11) marks the district’s biggest haul in recent times, accounting for the bulk of the 680 grams seized within Ernakulam rural limits so far this year.
A special team led by Ernakulam Rural District Police Chief K.S. Sudarshan made the seizure and arrested three Assam natives. The police said the bust exposed a racket involved in smuggling narcotics from Assam by road. The heroin was allegedly concealed in secret compartments inside a car.
So far this year, the rural police have registered 475 NDPS cases and arrested 588 persons. “Further investigation is on, and more arrests are expected,” Mr. Sudarshan said.
