A bomb squad combed the new bus terminus, off Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48), near the Collectorate in Vellore town over a hoax bomb threat issued through helpline number (100) to the Police Control Room on Wednesday.
Police said the threat, received through a phone call from Chennai, warned of a possible explosion at the new bus terminus, leading to swift action by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS).
Spread over 9.25 hectares, the ₹53.13 crore-terminus was built under the Smart Cities Mission by the Corporation. The facility was inaugurated by former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in June 2021. In November 2023, a permanent police outpost was opened at the terminus.
The new terminus facilitates the operation of more than 500 buses.
Following the bomb threat, the BDDS teams, assisted by sniffer dogs, conducted search operations in and around the premises — including parking lots and bus bays at the new terminus. The team did not detect any potential explosive devices. A case was registered by Vellore North police. A probe is under way.
