I faced them as freedom fighters faced bullets, says Mahua Moitra after eggs thrown at her

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday (September 16, 2026) alleged that BJP workers pelted eggs at her during a visit to her Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal’s Nadia.

In a series of posts on X, Ms. Moitra referred to an oral observation made by the Supreme Court last month when it had denied her permission to appear virtually before an investigating officer in a case over her allegedly provocative Facebook posts on the apprehension that she might be attacked with eggs.

“Big shout out to Hon’ble Justice Dipankar Datta! MiLord – I came to my constituency for a mtng [meeting] informing @WBPolice & BJP workers with their help pelted eggs on me. True to your advice I faced them as a freedom fighter faced bullets,” Ms. Moitra posted.

During the August 7 hearing of Ms. Moitra’s plea, Justice Dipankar Datta had made the oral remarks that freedom fighters had faced bullets when her counsel cited the possibility of eggs being thrown at her.

“Justice Dipankar Datta—MiLord I am officially both an MP in independent India & a freedom fighter today!,” Ms. Moitra said in another post, adding that “BJP office bearers (NOT public)” surrounded my “meeting and pelted eggs as I left. Thank you MiLord for upholding our Constitutional protections”.

Ms. Moitra also shared a video of protesters, bringing it to the attention of the State’s Director General of Police, saying that the protesters were shouting “Hindu Virodhi Mahua Dur Hato”. She said the faces of those involved were visible. “You will of course register FIR against ‘Unknown Persons’ ! Jai Shri Ram indeed!” she added.

This is not the first time that the Trinamool Congress MP and Mamata Banerjee loyalist have faced protests and attacks allegedly by BJP supporters. Earlier, on August 14, a huge crowd gathered outside the Circuit House in Nadia and the MP said that she was asked to vacate the premises in the middle of the night.

On July 1, she alleged that a mob comprising BJP workers protested outside a local party office in Krishnanagar while she was meeting party workers. She claimed that the mob threw stones and eggs and that she was injured.

After the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls, eggs were also thrown at several Trinamool leaders, including MLAs and MPs. The repeated incidents in the presence of police and in police custody have drawn concern from the Calcutta High Court. BJP leaders in West Bengal have described such attacks as a reflection of anger among people against Trinamool leaders.
