To mark nearly eight decades of research in marine science, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) celebrated its 79th Foundation Day here on Tuesday, by hosting an ‘Open House’ at its Mandapam Regional Centre for the benefit of students and general public.
The event, designed to bridge the gap between scientific research and the community, drew an crowd of over 3,000 students from Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai districts, along with approximately 250 members of the general public.

For many visiting students, the event offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at high-level marine research. Several key facilities were opened to the public, including: Marine Biodiversity Museum, Marine Research Aquarium, Marine Hatchery, National Marine Fish Brood bank and Seaweed plantlet production unit.
The scientists and staff of the centre explained in detail on the marine ecosystem, marine life and the various research activities undertaken by the institute.
A ‘Students-Scientists Interaction meeting’ was also organised to create awareness among the students on the importance of marine ecosystem, marine resources, and the conservation and sustainable utilisation of the same.
A total of 500 students participated in the interaction meeting. Besides, motivation and career guidance was given to about 350 students of class 10th and 12th representing various schools.
The event was inaugurated by S.Murugan, Principal in-charge, PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya, CMFRI Mandapam and Prakash, Headmaster, Panchayat Union Primary School, Marakayarpattinam, Mandapam.
