Most sportsmen past their prime are happy to stay at home with their family and dog, but Virat Kohli at 37 still behaves like a spring chicken on the field, diving and running, like he âwants to be there,â South African pacer Dale Steyn says.
Despite retiring from T20s and Tests, Kohli has shown that his ODI game remains unimpacted. The superstar, who turned 37 recently, scored his 52nd hundred in the first one-day against South Africa on Sunday (November 30, 2025).
âWhen you speak to most 37 or 38-year-olds, they say they hate leaving home, their dog, their kids. But he (Virat) is in a place mentally where heâs eager to be out there playing for India. You can see it when heâs running between the wickets, fielding and diving. Heâs mentally young, fresh, and wants to be here,â Steyn told JioStar on Sunday.
âHeâs played over 300 ODIs in 15â16 years, so the experience is inside him. Itâs in his body and mind. Even if he arrived here after three days of rain, it wouldnât have affected his preparation. Heâs mentally strong, visualises well, and can see the ball onto the bat. Thatâs what the best in the world do.
âThey back themselves because theyâve been out there so many times. A key thing he said is that heâs excited about playing,â Steyn added.
Following his 83rd international hundred, Kohli had spoken about his mindset and preparation at this stage of his career.
âI have never been a believer of a lot of preparation. All my cricket has been mental. I work physically very hard, as long as my fitness levels are up and I am feeling well, itâs good,â said Kohli.
âIâve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket, if youâre in touch with the game and are able to hit balls in the practice, if you bat for an hour or two in the nets, you know youâre good,â he said.
