For the first time, India is playing a seminal role in setting global telecom standards, said Union Minister for Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Speaking at Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) meeting in Bengaluru on Thursday (July 10, 2025), he said the country was aiming at contributing 10% of global 6G patents, backed by ₹239 crore in R&D funding for 111 projects on the ground.

“With 99% of mobile phones now made in India, 60% import substitution in telecom equipment, and indigenous 4G/5G stacks, India is now a frontrunner in telecom innovation,’‘ the Minister said. He was addressing an audience of telecom researchers, industry leaders, and global partners.

Outlining a bold roadmap for the country’s leadership in the next-gen telecom, the Minister said this was a shift powered by the country’s vision of Anusandhan, Atmanirbharta, and “Make in India” and “Make for the World”.

Highlighting the role of B6GA’s seven expert working groups and 80+ members, Mr. Scindia said the alliance had become a hub of innovation and global collaboration. The Union Minister urged stakeholders to take ownership of the 6G mission. “In PM Modi’s India, the government is not in the driver’s seat — you are,” he said. He called for a 3 to 4 year roadmap, broken into monthly targets, and bi-annual reviews to ensure momentum. Calling for execution with impact, he said the Bharat 6G Alliance must emerge as the ecosystem builder that transforms India from a knowledge destination into a global telecom superpower.

Mr. Scindia had earlier met the B6GA in September 2024, which marked the first meeting with all the seven working groups of the alliance — Spectrum, Technology, Device, Use Cases, Green and Sustainability, Applications and Outreach.
