At Baan Phadthai, the Thai restaurant that recently opened in Knowledge City (gate no 3), Hyderabad, you will find just 25 dishes on the menu. Notably absent are the familiar red, yellow and green Thai curries. The restaurant’s name, however, points you towards its star attraction — phad Thai. Its signature version features rice noodles tossed in an 18-ingredient sauce that strikes a balance between sweet and tangy.
The 64-seat restaurant has deep-blue walls paired with vivid orange accents create a striking, high-contrast aesthetic. The design draws inspiration from the old shophouses tucked into Bangkok’s backstreets and neighbourhood markets: timber-framed facades, warm lighting, vintage curios and eclectic artwork.

This is not a place for a quiet meal; the background music feels like a radio being tuned to a music station.
The restaurant promises a slice of Bangkok’s bustling street-food culture, complete with sizzling woks, comforting flavours and warm Thai hospitality. Founded by entrepreneur Frédéric Meyer in Bangkok in 2016, Baan Phadthai has built its reputation on authentic flavours and respect for Thai culinary traditions.

That promise, however, faltered at the very beginning. It took 45 minutes, two starters, two mocktails and three reminders before water finally arrived at the table. The mocktails, thankfully, made a stronger first impression, delivering plenty of zing and tang, finished with playful garnishes such as an entire rice cracker.
No visit to a Thai restaurant is complete without som tum, the classic raw papaya salad. The yum sam-o also came highly recommended. While the som tum got the flavour profile right — spicy, tangy and sweet — the papaya juliennes had lost their characteristic crunch and looked dull in both colour and texture, almost as though they had begun to oxidise. The four cherry tomato slices were not to blame.
The yum sam-o, meanwhile, emerged as the standout. Sweet pomelo and orange are tossed with spices into a bright, refreshing salad that is equal parts citrusy and addictive.

If you prefer your salads at the start of your meal, be sure to mention it. Ours was served midway through the starters, which included gai yang vichianburi, an Eshan-style (refers to the cuisine and culture of the Isaan region in northeastern Thailand, and renowned for bold, rustic, and deeply savory flavours) char-grilled chicken served with cucumber and coriander salad and a spicy coconut dressing; gai tod, brined and fried chicken wings accompanied by two excellent sweet and spicy dips; and the signature Thai satay. These are starters that let the meat do the talking — light on batter, free of heavy sauces and served simply, allowing diners to dress them as they please.
A few tables away, a friend ordered the Bangkok-style crab omelette, beautifully fluffy and generously studded with crab meat. Portion sizes across the menu are generous.
The 25-dish menu also includes 11 rice sets, several paired with curries. A couple draw inspiration from Malaysian flavours, as noted on the menu, so do not be surprised if some dishes lean towards a drier, spicier heat.

I headed straight for the signature phad Thai. The presentation is understated, with the final assembly completed tableside by the server. One portion is easily enough for two. The noodles are noticeably sweeter than the average phad Thai you would find in Bangkok, and the dried roots left on the bean sprouts felt more distracting than authentic. Would I recommend it? Yes, but ask for less sauce and a side of fresh Thai red chillies if you prefer a more balanced, less sweet rendition.
There are only two desserts, but both are worth ordering, especially the khanom baitoey — a comforting combination of toast, pandan cream and ice cream.
Service is remarkably quick once your order is placed. Just do not expect the same urgency when it comes to a glass of water.
Meal for two: ₹2,500 upwards.
