A large number of public, including relatives and family members of the two children – Niraimathi (10) and her brother Bala Praveen (5), who were electrocuted two days ago, staged a road blockade for over two hours on Thursday.
As a result, police had a tough time and had to divert vehicles which had piled up on the Kamudi-Madurai road for the second day.
It is said that the two children, who were playing near the Achankulam panchayat office, died after they came in contact with a live electrical wire. The bodies were sent for post-mortem. However, the parents – Mohandas and Latha – refused to accept the bodies and demanded action against the panchayat officials for their negligence.
Though the revenue and police officers assured to take action, the villagers resorted to a agitation the second day. As a sequel, panchayat secretary Rasu and line inspector of Tangedco Thangasamy, were suspended.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay had ordered release of ₹3 lakh to the family members as compensation. However, the villagers sought higher relief of ₹10 lakh each and a government job to the family. The talks were inconclusive.
Vehicles were diverted at more than two intersections – Madurai-Kamudi-Paramakudi and Kamudi-Madurai-Kodumalur respectively. Police detained over 60 people at a nearest kalyana mandapam as they refused to drop the stir.
Further investigation was on.
