Kanniyakumari Collector M. Prathap has directed government officials to promptly address the basic needs of people at the gram sabha meeting held at Thiruppathisaram on Saturday.
The meeting was organised as part of the 80th independence day celebrations. Mr. Prathap attended the meeting as the chief guest and addressed the villagers.
Highlighting the historical evidence of gram sabhas from Chola era inscriptions, he emphasised that the gram sabhas were one of the unique features of India.
He underscored the importance of segregation of waste before handing it over to sanitation workers, and urged people not to dump garbage along the roadside. Girls should not be married before 18 years of age and they must be provided with higher education and employment opportunities.
Applauding the significant increase in the girl child birth rate in Thovalai taluk over the past two years, he said it was heartening to see the number of girl children increasing in the area.

Meanwhile, Thoothukudi Collector Vishu Mahajan participated as a special observer at a gram sabha meeting held at Thirupanichettikulam.
Addressing the villagers, he said the district administration had been taking measures to ensure that eligible beneficiaries received the benefits of government schemes. More than 20 projects were being implemented through 40 departments and government officials must create awareness of the schemes among the people.
Emphasising the importance of education, Mr. Mahajan advised parents to ensure that their wards completed their school education and pursued higher studies. Around 90% of opportunities were employment-oriented for students who had completed polytechnic or ITI courses.
The Collector also handed over the completed Jal Jeevan Mission project to the panchayat and launched the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 in the village.
