Karnataka ranks third in NITI Aayog’s electric mobility index 2025

Karnataka has emerged as one of India’s top-performing States in electric mobility, securing the third position nationally with a score of 73 in the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025 released by NITI Aayog on Saturday.

Karnataka is also among the two leading large States classified as top performers, alongside Maharashtra, reflecting its progress in advancing electric mobility.

Delhi topped the overall rankings with a score of 84, followed by Maharashtra with 78. Karnataka secured 73, followed by Chandigarh, 71, and Goa, 65. The Index classifies jurisdictions scoring 65 and above as top performers.

Charging facility

Karnataka recorded a score of 97 in Charging Infrastructure Readiness (CIR), the highest in the country, highlighting the State’s progress in developing the infrastructure required to support electric vehicle adoption.

In IEMI 2024, Karnataka ranked fourth in the country with a score of 64 and was listed in the top performers’ category after Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh.

This is the second edition of IEMI, developed by NITI Aayog in collaboration with WRI India. It evaluates the progress of States and Union Territories towards electric mobility, covering both policy frameworks and implementation outcomes.

Dedicated policy

Receiving the recognition at the launch of IEMI 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Gaurav Gupta, said: “Karnataka’s electric mobility initiatives include Bescom EV Mithra, a unified electric vehicle charging app, a single-window clearance system and an EV Accelerator Cell. Karnataka was also the first State in India to introduce a dedicated electric vehicle policy in 2017, covering vehicle sales, charging infrastructure and dedicated manufacturing zones.”

Mr. Gupta added that Karnataka currently has 6,979 EV charging stations, including 4,896 in Bengaluru. “EV sales are also on the rise, with penetration close to 15% during the first five months of FY 2026–27. The State has recorded the third-highest cumulative EV sales in the country after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra,” he said.

Elaborating on the EV registrations, he said Karnataka accounts for 8.81% of India’s overall EV registrations. The State is second in both two-wheeler and four-wheeler registrations, after Maharashtra. In e-bus registrations, Karnataka ranks third, after Delhi and Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, K.J. George, Minister for Energy and Tourism, said that Karnataka will continue to strengthen its electric mobility ecosystem through supportive policies, infrastructure development and initiatives that facilitate wider adoption of electric vehicles.
