The Kochi City police have decided to intensify the investigation into the fire that partially gutted Fort Kochi’s iconic Koder House and the recent arson incident outside the historic Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in the city, in view of the Jewish heritage associated with both institutions.
The fact that the person arrested in connection with the synagogue arson is being investigated for possible terror links has prompted the police to take a fresh look at the Fort Kochi incident. However, officials cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about possible foul play in the fire.
Addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kochi City) Arun K. Pavithran emphasised the need for a closer examination of the Koder House fire, even though there is currently no information directly linking the two incidents. Further conclusions can be drawn only after forensic copies of the electronic devices seized from the accused in the synagogue arson case are obtained and other materials are examined in detail, he said.
The Fort Kochi police have so far found no evidence of external involvement in the Koder House fire. Forensic findings are awaited to establish whether a short circuit, identified as the most likely cause, triggered the blaze. A final conclusion can be reached only after the Electrical Inspectorate and other scientific experts collect the necessary samples and complete their examinations.
Koder House has remained closed since the fire. Restoration work and reopening may require clearance from the relevant heritage and archaeological authorities. The blaze broke out on the evening of September 29, causing extensive damage to the historic property, which is renowned for its distinctive Indo-Portuguese architectural style.
