The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) management has assured the Kerala State Elderly Commission of stringent measures to ensure that seats reserved for senior citizens in KSRTC buses will be made available to them.

The assurance was given at a meeting of the commission held with KSRTC chairman and managing director Pramoj Shankar and other senior officials on steps to transform KSRTC buses into elderly-friendly means of public transport. The discussion was held in the wake of many complaints by various senior citizen forums.

Demands raised at the meeting included ensuring 20% of seats on KSRTC buses for senior citizens and earmarking a similar 20% quota for the elderly in online ticket bookings. An assurance was given by Mr. Shankar in this regard.

The commission urged granting conductors the power to fine passengers occupying elderly-reserved seats. It further recommended that identification cards issued by employers to the elderly be treated as a valid proof for reserving seats.

KSRTC authorities said they would examine the recommendation to reduce the height of steps to enable the elderly to board buses easily and the practicality of shifting the placement of seats reserved for the elderly from atop the bus tyres.

Commission chairperson K. Somaprasad, member Amaravila Ramakrishnan, commission secretary G. Vinod, registrar Sarada T.R. and KSRTC executive director Pradeep Kumar G.P. attended the discussions.
