L-G, CM laud VCRC on its golden jubilee

Lauding the research initiatives of Vector Control Research Centre (VCRC) during its 50 years of existence in Puducherry, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Tuesday said the guidance given by VCRC has helped the country in its various national disease control programmes.

Participating in the golden jubilee celebrations of the Centre, the Lt. Governor said the institute has played a crucial role in strengthening Union Government’s programmes, such as National Malaria Control and Elimination, National Filariasis Elimination, controlling dengue and chikungunya. The research programmes conducted by the institute has helped the government in framing policies, guidelines and field practices, he said.

“Vector-borne diseases, such as malaria, filariasis, dengue, chikungunya, and so on, have historically caused immense suffering in our country. The diseases affect the vulnerable sections of the society. Vector Control is therefore, not just a scientific activity, it is a humanitarian mission. It is about saving lives, reducing suffering and ensuring dignity for all. For the last 50 years, VCRC has been at the forefront of such initiatives,” he said. 

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy also praised the research carried out by the organisation in preventing vector-borne diseases, particularly elephantiasis. “As the institute functions from my constituency, I have seen it grow in stature day by day. The institute should now focus on tackling new diseases and growing health challenges,” he said.
