Police arrested a law student for allegedly injuring a businessman during a practice session at his house in Basavanagudi in southern part of the city.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Afzal, a resident of Basavanagudi. The police have seized three airguns from him, which he had allegedly purchased for shooting practice for sporting events.
The incident occurred on December 10 around 8 p.m., when the victim, Rajagopal D., who runs a restobar in south Bengaluru, was walking with a relative near K.R. Park.
According to the FIR, the victim heard a loud noise and then got hit on his neck. He later filed a complaint stating that he had been shot with an airgun.
A senior police officer overseeing the investigation told The Hindu that the probe was challenging due to the size of the pellet, prompting investigators to pursue a two-pronged approach.
âWe formed a team to identify stores that sell airguns in the city and examined data on people who had purchased such weapons in the locality. At the same time, we conducted ballistic tests to determine the distance and direction from which the pellet originated,â the officer said.
The ballistic test results indicated possible points of origin of the pellet, following which the accused was traced after questioning multiple individuals.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Afzal has been practising shooting for the past year, as he wanted to take part in shooting sports.
âHe claims that he was practising at home and that he missed the target once, which led to the mishap. However, we are verifying his statement,â the officer added. Police are yet to identify the specific air gun allegedly used in the incident.
The Basavanagudi police have filed an FIR against Afzal under BNS Section 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.
