Leaders of various Left parties on Wednesday (February 4) alleged that constitutional governance and the rule of law in Andhra Pradesh are being systematically undermined, with public issues deliberately diverted through intimidation, illegal cases and violence against people’s movements.
The remarks came during a joint meeting of Left parties, chaired by CPI State secretary G. Eeswaraiah. CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao, CPI(ML) New Democracy leaders P. Prasadu and M. Ramakrishna, CPI(ML) Liberation leader T. Harinath, RSP leader Janakiramaulu, Forward Bloc leader Sundararama Raju, MCPI(U) leaders Khadar Basha and Chandrasekhar, and SUCI(C) leaders Amarnath and Sudheer were present
Referring to Mohan Babu University, Mr. Srinivasa Rao alleged that massive exploitation was taking place in the name of fees and that students were being subjected to harassment, pushing parents into severe mental distress. “SFI leaders Akbar and Vinod, who questioned these irregularities, were kidnapped by the institution’s bouncers, taken to forest areas, brutally assaulted and an attempt was made to kill them,” he alleged, adding that if the police had not intervened in time, the students might have been murdered.
A prior complaint was lodged at a police station to create an alibi, indicating a premeditated conspiracy, he said, and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, the immediate arrest of Mohan Babu and his son Vishnu, and the takeover of the university by the government.
The leaders also condemned the arrest of farmers’ leader Appalaraju under the Preventive Detention Act and alleged police excess against CPI activists who questioned employment guarantee work irregularities. Criticising trade policies, they warned that agreements with the U.S. and the E.U. could harm agriculture, aqua, dairy and textile sectors.
Mr. Eeswaraiah expressed full support for the nationwide general strike on February 12, while CPI(ML) leader Prasadu urged democratic forces to unite against the alleged large-scale transfer of public resources to corporate interests. The Left parties demanded the withdrawal of alleged false cases, the protection of public movements and the restoration of democratic rights.
