Doctors at Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital (VGMCH) have saved the life of a 76-year-old woman, D. Chellapappa of Virudhunagar, who was rushed to the hospital with complete heart block on Sunday.
The woman had complained of breathlessness and giddiness. However, she was rushed to he hospital in an unconscious state.
Upon investigation, the doctors found that the woman’s heart beat was only 30 per minute, which was abnormally low.
Cardiologist B. Rajesh immediately stabilised the patient’s heart rate by placing a temporary pacemaker to the patient. The woman’s health has shown progress.
Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital had procured the temporary pacemaker a few months back.
Though the woman did not have Chief Minister’s Health Insurance scheme card, the doctors performed the life-saving procedure free of cost, which would have cost the patient around ₹1.5 lakh, Dr. Rajesh said.
VGMCH is the first among the 11 Government hospitals inaugurated in 2022 to have used temporary pacemaker to save a life, according to a statement from the hospital Dean, Amutharani.
