Delhi Police seek closure of Metro stations

According to an official communication issued on Thursday (October 8, 2026), the Joint Commissioner of Police, Transport Range, requested the DMRC to take appropriate measures at identified Metro stations in view of proposed protests at Jantar Mantar and other locations in the New Delhi district. The communication cited the possibility of large crowds moving towards sensitive locations.

The proposed restrictions are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Friday (October 9, 2026) and continue through October 10, 2026, until the situation returns to normal.

The Delhi Police have requested the DMRC to issue necessary directions to its officers and staff to implement the proposed measures. The communication seeks precautionary arrangements in anticipation of the planned protests.

However, the letter only records Delhi Police’s request and does not confirm whether the DMRC has approved or implemented the proposed closures.

CJP’s October 10 protest

The October 10 demonstration has been called by the CJP and student organisations, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA), amid protests over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The organisers have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities in the revision exercise, and reforms to the process of appointing Election Commissioners.

The CJP’s October 10 demonstration forms part of a broader campaign against the SIR exercise, which has faced opposition from political parties and student groups over concerns relating to electoral roll revisions and alleged voter exclusions. The Election Commission has maintained that the exercise is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls.

Permission denied for Jantar Mantar protest

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have denied permission for the Cockroach Janata Party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, citing alleged non-compliance with conditions agreed upon during an earlier demonstration.

The decision comes two days after CJP co-convener Saurav Das submitted an intimation letter to Delhi Police on October 7, informing authorities of the planned demonstration and seeking arrangements for law and order and traffic management.

Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Nupur Prasad said on Friday (October 9) that permission for the protest was sought at short notice, whereas the rules require organisers to apply at least 10 days in advance.

Security stepped up across Delhi

Delhi Police have intensified security arrangements across the national capital ahead of the October 10 march demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

According to official communications issued on October 5 and October 6, at least 70 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), comprising about 7,000 personnel and currently deployed in West Bengal and Chhattisgarh, are being mobilised for law and order duties in Delhi ahead of the protest called by the CJP.

The Police have also launched a local outreach campaign to discourage public participation in the proposed demonstration. Authorities have been holding meetings with owners of student paying guest accommodations, market associations and Resident Welfare Associations, urging citizens not to join the agitation between October 7 and October 10.
