A loud underground sound triggered a tremor-like situation, sending shockwaves through residents in several parts of Malappuram district in Kerala on Tuesday night. People rushed out of their houses after a thundering noise was heard at 11.16 p.m.
The powerful rumble was heard at Vengara, Kottakkal, Othukkungal, Edarikode, Palachiramad, Parappur, Changuvetty, Kozhichina and Oorakam.
Residents in Amappara, Kaipallikkundu, Kottappady, Palathara, Puthuparamba, Pottippara, Kolathuparamba, Kakkathadam, Cheenamputhur and Arichol said that they experienced “tremors” around 11.15 p.m.
No damage reported
Some residents reported their windowpanes shaking, while others said they felt the tremor even in their vehicles. However, no damage was reported from any area.
Surveillance camera footage from several houses captured the tremor, accompanied by a cracking sound, at 11.16 p.m.
However, government officials said that no tremor had been officially confirmed.
A similar incident had caused panic in the area in 2022.
