Lt. Governor inaugurates renovated dhobikhanas, modern fish market

Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Monday jointly inaugurated the renovated dhobikhanas and a modern hygienic fish market constructed by the Puducherry Municipality under the Union Government’s Cities Investments to Innovate Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) Challenge programme.

The civic body has developed the dhobikhanas at Marapalam in Mudaliarpet and Ramalinga Nagar in Vaithikuppam at a cost of around ₹3. 82 crore and ₹1. 86 crore respectively with allocation under the CITIIS programme. The cost for the construction of the market at Nethaji Nagar in Uppalam was around ₹1. 93 crore, an official said.

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT

The renovation of dhobikhanas was one of the long-pending demands of laundry workers, the official said, adding that the dhobikhana at Marapalam has been provided with 20 quarters for people to stay. The other dhobikhana at Ramalinga Nagar has been equipped with facilities to store dress materials, the official said. 

The Municipality has also made operational the LPG crematorium, constructed under the CITIIS project, at Sanyasithottam. The facility, constructed at a cost of around ₹3.3 crore, was made ready for public use a few days ago, he said.

CITIIS Challenge was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs as a component of the Smart City project in 2018. Puducherry was one among the few regions selected by the Ministry to implement sustainable urban infrastructure projects in low-income settlements in the country.

Speaker R. Selvam, Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan, MLA Annibal Kennedy, Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan and other officials participated in the event.
