The spirit of patriotism swept through Madurai City Armed Reserve Police Grounds today as the district administration celebrated India’s 77th Republic Day with a grand ceremonial event.
District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar, unfurled the flag, led the festivities, marking a day of honours, welfare initiatives, and vibrant cultural displays
The ceremony commenced with the District Collector unfurling the national flag, followed by an inspection of the Guard of Honour.
In a poignant moment of the morning, Mr. Praveen Kumar honoured local freedom fighters with shawls, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the nation’s independence.
The event also served as a platform to recognise excellence in public service. A total of 285 police personnel—comprising 103 from the District Police and 182 from the Madurai City Police—were decorated with the Chief Minister’s Police Medal.
Furthermore, certificates and shields were awarded to 333 individuals, including government officials and social activists, for their exemplary dedication to the district’s progress.
Reflecting the government’s commitment to social welfare, the Collector distributed aid totalling ₹61.93 lakh to 30 beneficiaries under various State schemes. These initiatives aimed to provide immediate support and long-term empowerment to residents across the district.

The atmosphere was electrified by the performances of 642 students from eight schools across Madurai and Melur. The cultural segment featured a diverse array of traditional and patriotic performances from institutions including: Nirmala and Saurashtra Girls Higher Secondary Schools, Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Middle School, Amutham and Bharathiyar Matriculation Schools.
The celebration saw a gathering officials including City Police Commissioner J. Loganathan, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari, and DIG (Madurai Range) Abhinav Kumar.
