Garbage pile-up
Sanitary workers of the Madurai Municipal Corporation have withdrawn their strike. However, the woes of the residents seem not to have ended. Garbage has piled up everywhere. To add more trouble, the rainfall has soaked waste and many streets in and around Meenakshi Temple, Thirumalai Naick Palace and at Flower Market on Madurai-Melur Road.
The civic authorities should start night cleaning not only in commercial zones, but also in residential areas and clear the backlog.

One-way violation rampant
Of late, not only two-wheelers violate one-way traffic system, but even four-wheelers and goods vehicles also indulge in taking short-cuts on main thoroughfares posing danger to the motorists abiding traffic rules.
Early mornings and late nights, vehicles coming on the opposite direction (wrong side) on Alagarkoil Road (i.e) from Visalam Coffee Shop towards Periyar statue. Likewise, vehicles also use the Forest Department or the DIG Camp Office Road from Tamil Nadu Pandian Hotel towards District Court.
The city police should enforce laws strictly especially when vehicle population is on the rise.

Speed-breakers must
User friendly speed-breakers are essential on Alagar Koil Road (in front of Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple, Tallakulam) Ghokale Road (Booma Nursing Home) and KK Nagar Main Road (near Anna Nagar police station) as pedestrians find it tough crossing the road.
Vehicles come at breakneck speed on these roads. In the absence of traffic police, crossing from one end to another is a high risk. When the authorities can post a policeman in front of the Madurai District Court, what prevents them from deploying policemen in other places too.

Carriage space encroachment
The Madurai Railway Station (Eastern Entrance) is flooded with call taxis and autorickshaws giving very limited space for the vehicle movement on West Veli Street side from Periyar Bus Stand. The railway authorities should find ways to provide space inside the campus so that the carriage space on the road is not encroached. Like in Madurai Airport, the taxis should be permitted parking inside the railway station and a fee collected.

This is with reference to the news item in The Hindu dated October 10, 2026. Kudos to Madurai Corporation Commissioner for taking proactive steps to open the ITDP (Institute for Transportation and Development Policy) MoU signed.
At the same time it will be a tough task for officials to implement this comprehensive road and street design guidelines particularly in south Madurai crossing AV bridge.
The four Veli Streets entirely lack safety for pedestrians, public transport and commuters. The footpath on either side of the road in these streets has been encroached by commercial establishments and street vendors.
Also parking policy adds woes to the above problem. This is high time to open the multilevel parking facility at Periyar Bus Stand..
As the Commissioner remains committed to transforming the city to be safer and people-centric, now it is the turn of all stakeholders to ensure utmost coordination.
