The Aranthangi police have arrested a 32-year-old man on charges of setting afire three motorcycles that were parked in front of the Traffic Police station at Aranthangi in the early hours on Wednesday.
Police said the accused, S. Vinod, from Melavazhakarai village in Nagapattinam district, had been working as a construction labourer in Aranthangi. He was inebriated and went to the bus stand where he lost cash. He went to the Aranthangi traffic police station and sat on one of the motorcycles parked in front of the traffic police station.
The vehicle fell down and the petrol leaked from the fuel tank. Vinod lit a cigarette and allegedly threw the match stick due to which the vehicle caught fire. Two other motorcycles parked closely also caught fire in the melee and the three vehicles were gutted. On noticing this, Vinod fled the spot and reached his native district. Police personnel examined the video grab from the surveillance camera and identified the culprit. A police team went to Nagapattinam district and arrested Vinod, police sources said.
