A Delhi court on Friday held a 43-year-old man, identified as Sandeep Panwar of west Delhi’s Vipin Garden area, guilty of harassing a woman census enumerator during official duty. The conviction came 24 days after the FIR was registered.
According to the police, the incident was reported on May 19, following which an FIR was registered at Dwarka North police station under sections 79, 221 and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complainant alleged that Panwar misbehaved with her while she was conducting census-related work.
Police said the accused fled after the incident but was traced and arrested on May 20. During the investigation, the complainant’s statement was recorded before a court under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, while an eyewitness’s statement was recorded under Section 180 of the BNSS.
The accused fled after the incident, but was traced and arrested a day later. “The chargesheet was prepared, scrutinised and approved within 40 hours of the FIR being registered and filed in court on May 21 with a request for a speedy trial,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Kushal Pal Singh.
The sentencing is likely to take place at a later date.
