A 26-year-old man drowned in River Cauvery while attempting to immerse a Vinayaka idol at Chithode in the district on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as C. Vignesh of Neikarapatti in Salem. According to the police, Vignesh had come to Chithode along with his friends carrying a Vinayaka idol. At around 5 p.m., he entered the Cauvery beneath the bridge at Lakshmi Nagar to immerse the idol when he drowned.
People who were fishing nearby helped retrieve his body, which was sent to Government Erode Medical College and Hospital in Perundurai for postmortem examination. The spot where the incident occurred had been prohibited for bathing and immersion of idols, the police said.
