A 32-year-old man was killed in a wild elephant attack in a forest area close to human settlements at Mayiladumpara, near Peechi, in Thrissur, Kerala, on Tuesday evening. The deceased has been identified as Shijo Puthenveetil of Thottumkara.
Shijo went to a nearby forest to graze his goats but did not return for a long time. When the goats came back without him and Shijo was found missing, local residents launched a search. His body was later discovered during the search operation.
Shijo was a temporary employee of the Kerala Water Authority, Peechi. His body was taken to the hospital around 10 pm. The incident occurred in the forest area under the jurisdiction of the Pattikkad Forest Station.
Following the incident, angry residents blocked a Forest department vehicle, leading to brief tensions in the area.
Last year, a native of Thamaravellachal was killed in a similar wild elephant attack inside the Peechi Wildlife Sanctuary, highlighting growing concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region.
