Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan and Dairy Development Minister Mano Thangaraj inaugurated the free meal scheme for local body sanitary workers in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari districts on Monday.
The scheme which has been expanded to cover sanitation workers in all corporations, municipalities and town panchayats across Tamil Nadu was launched by chief minister M.K. Stalin at Polivakkam in Tiruvallur district.
Following the formal launch, Ms. Jeevan inaugurated the scheme by serving food for sanitation workers of Thoothukudi corporation.
The event was presided over by Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath. Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka and other officials were present.
Under this scheme in Thoothukdui district, a total of 3,359 sanitation workers will be benefitted. This includes 813 workers in Kovilpatti, Kayalpattinam and Tiruchendur municipalities, 832 workers of 18 town panchayats and 1,714 workers of Thoothukudi corporation.
In Kanniyakumari district, Mr. Mano Thangaraj inaugurated the scheme at the private community hall in Parakkai Road Junction. The minister also served food for the sanitation workers at the inaugural event.
A total of 1,372 sanitation workers in Nagercoil corporation, 108 workers in Kuzhithurai municipality, 111 workers in Padmanabhapuram municipality, 91 workers in Colachel municipality, 187 workers in Kollengode municipality, 82 workers in Kanniyakumari municipality and 1,316 workers of 50 town panchayats in the district will be benefited through the scheme.
Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena, Nagercoil Corporation Mayor R. Mahesh, Nagercoil Corporation Commissioner Nishant Krishna and other officials were present.
