A minor fire occurred at the departure hall of the T2 international terminal in Chennai airport due to an electrical short circuit. Consequently, a part of the terminal was engulfed in smoke on Tuesday (January 27, 2026).
Around 11.40 a.m., due to an electrical short circuit, there was a minor fire that emanated a lot of smoke. All passengers in the check-in area were immediately evacuated and are safe, said the officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI).

They added that the electrical short circuit occurred near the airline offices where some documents had been stored and in the connecting corridor of the T1 domestic terminal and the T2 international terminal.
According to sources, two fire tenders immediately rushed to the spot and began to put out the smoke. Around 1 p.m., after the smoke subsided and when the situation was brought under control, passengers were allowed inside the terminal.
AAI officials said the flight operations were not affected due to the incident. The next flight at 2.35 p.m. will depart as per the schedule.
