Palayamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab has submitted petitions with Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana urging the urban civic body to lay the roads which were dug up for the underground drainage scheme and create an exclusive area for setting up meat shops.

In separate petitions submitted during the weekly grievances redress meeting held on Tuesday, Mr. Wahab said the Corporation had set up its temporary shops at the erstwhile police quarters area on Tiruchendur Road for housing the Gandhi Market shops even as the 100-year-old market was rebuilt under the Smart City Mission.

After the reconstructed Gandhi Market was opened formally, the shops including fruit, grocery, meat and household article shops on police quarters area have returned back to the market. Hence, the vacant police quarters land can be used exclusively for setting up meat shops in Palayamkottai, which will also become easy for the sanitary workers to remove the meat waste from this point.

The MLA urged the Corporation to relay the roads dug for the underground drainage scheme. The Corporation, besides giving unicode to the hitherto uncovered roads for laying it again, should start laying the roads in the areas were underground drainage project had been completed, Mr. Wahab said.

A group of residents from Rajendra Nagar in ward 32 of Palayamkottai Zone submitted a petition seeking the construction of drainage channel in their area, which experienced flooding during the December 2023 downpour after nearby Ilanthaikulam overflowed and the rainwater flowing from Perumalpuram marooned Rajendra Nagar.

They also appealed to the Corporation to relay the roads dug for the underground drainage work in their area, which were completed a year ago.

The residents of Thai Nagar second and third streets submitted a petition seeking the laying of drinking water distribution pipes with 3 inches diameter for improving drinking water supply.

Residents of Giri Nagar in ward 48 in Melapalayam Zone also submitted a petition seeking improved drinking water supply to their area.
