YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) general secretary M.V.S. Nagi Reddy has alleged that more than 300 farmers have ended their life after the NDA government came to power in the State as the agriculture sector has plunged into a crisis.
The coalition government failed to improve the lot of farmers, and, as a consequence, at least two farmers were committing suicide every week, Mr. Nagi Reddy said while addressing the media at the party office in Tadepalli on Saturday. Demanding that remedial action be taken forthwith, he said farmers were in distress because of unremunerative prices.
He said the YSRCP government had paid ₹5 lakh each to the families of 474 farmers who ended their life in 2014-19. Mr. Nagi Reddy said the NDA government should pay an ex gratia of more than ₹7 lakh on humanitarian grounds. He demanded that the farmers’ welfare schemes introduced by the YSRCP be restored. He said that the prices of chilli, tobacco, banana, maize, cotton, onion, tomato, sugarcane and mango declined steeply, causing huge losses to the farmers.
