The United Muslim Forum, a panel of faith leaders, and professionals, described Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent comments about Bengali-speaking Muslims in that State and maintained this would lead to their economic boycott and disenfranchisement.
The Forum stated that the living conditions of Muslims in Assam had steadily deteriorated. The panel alleged that during the special revision of electoral rolls being undertaken by the Election Commission of India, the Chief Minister had publicly encouraged party workers to seek the deletion of a large number of Muslim voters by filing objections.
The Forum stated that calls were being made for the economic boycott of Muslims, including paying lower fares to Muslim autorickshaw drivers. It alleged that such remarks amounted to an attempt to divide society and undermine the rule of law.
The Forum has appealed to the President of India to intervene and remove the Chief Minister from office, and urged the Supreme Court of India to initiate suo motu proceedings in the matter.
