After a gap of several months, the residents of Dindigul district reported hearing a deafening blast‑like sound followed by mild tremors on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred around 9.35 a.m. and was felt across Dindigul city, its suburbs and parts of Athoor, Chinnalapatti, Natham and Vedasandur. People stepped out of their houses and workplaces in confusion, recalling similar unexplained episodes that had occurred intermittently in the district for more than a decade.
As Dindigul’s terrain is dominated by rocky formations, the residents wondered whether the noise was caused by blasting in stone quarries, explosives used for sinking borewells, or low‑flying supersonic aircraft possibly linked to the Air Force Station in Coimbatore. However, no official confirmation has been issued on any of these possibilities.
The authorities have so far been unable to provide a clear and conclusive account of the source of the sound and the tremors.
