The vigilance of an on-duty Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) helped the Railway Protection Force (RPF) recover a laptop and other valuables allegedly stolen from a passenger travelling on a train from Holenarsipur to Mangaluru.
The incident came to light following a Rail Madad complaint filed by Abhishek, who was travelling on Train No. 16585 from Holenarsipur to Mangaluru Junction. He noticed that his laptop bag was missing from his berth during the journey. He suspected that the bag could have gone missing somewhere between Holenarsipur and Sakleshpur.
The bag contained a Lenovo laptop valued at around ₹80,000, a charger, a gold chain, a wristwatch and identity cards.
During subsequent checks, TTE Chandra Nayak noticed a person travelling on Train No. 17302 (Belagavi-Mysuru) under suspicious circumstances. The person was detained and handed over to the RPF Outpost at K.R. Nagar.
During the enquiry, the person, identified as Basavaraj, reportedly admitted to stealing the laptop bag from Train No. 16585 in the section between Holenarsipur and Hassan.
He was subsequently handed over to the Sub-Inspector of the Government Railway Police (GRP), K.R. Nagar, Mysuru, for further investigation and legal action. The recovered belongings were secured and handed over to the passenger after due verification, a press release said.
South Western Railway appreciated the alertness and presence of mind of TTE Chandra Nayak, whose vigilance led to the recovery of the passenger’s belongings.
Railway authorities advised passengers to remain vigilant and keep their valuables secure during train journeys. Passengers can report loss, theft or other security-related issues through RailMadad (139) or approach railway staff or RPF personnel for assistance, the release added.
