A special team led by the district Superintendent of Police on Friday seized 140 kg of ganja, estimated to be worth ₹15.4 lakh, and arrested four persons in connection with an inter-district narcotics trafficking operation, the police said. The seizure was made during a coordinated operation near Madapuram on the Thiruthuraipoondi–Mannargudi road in the early hours of Thursday.
The arrested persons were identified as Raghupalan, 42, of Pushpavanam in Vedaranyam taluk, Muthu, 43, of Keeraipatti village in Dharmapuri district, Rajkumar, 28, of Nagochipatti in Salem district, and Vimalraj, 24, of Melpurikkal in Nallampalli taluk, Dharmapuri district. The accused were allegedly transporting the contraband in two cars.
According to the police, the operation was coordinated by Ramachandran of Dharmapuri district with the help of Diwakar. As per the plan, Rajkumar and Vimalraj transported the ganja from Dharmapuri in a car on the night of Wednesday, accompanied by Muthu. Around 8.15 a.m. on Thursday, the vehicle reached Madapuram, where Raghupalan, who was already waiting, took control of one of the cars carrying the contraband and proceeded towards a farm owned by Mahalingam at P.R. Puram, where the ganja was to be concealed.
Acting on specific intelligence, personnel from the Nagapattinam Special Police unit intercepted the vehicles near Vettakaraniruppu and seized the contraband. All the four were taken into custody and arrested. Further investigation is under way to trace the wider network involved in the trafficking operation.
