Naidu directs hassle-free paddy procurement, warns of strict action against units harming mango farmers

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments to prepare a comprehensive crop calendar covering Kharif–Rabi–Kharif seasons to maximise benefits for farmers. He said harvesting and marketing activities must be aligned with the calendar to ensure better returns to cultivators.

Reviewing paddy procurement and the marketing of various crop produce at a meeting held at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister asked officials to create awareness among farmers about suitable crops for each season, with a focus on quality improvement and proper guidance during harvesting. Ministers K. Atchannaidu and Nadendla Manohar participated in the review virtually.

Mr. Naidu called for strengthening cold chain infrastructure, improving access to domestic and international markets and encouraging processing of agricultural produce. He also suggested optimal use of logistics facilities, including rail cargo, for transporting farm produce across markets in the country.

Directing officials to complete paddy procurement within stipulated timelines in all districts, the Chief Minister addressed bank guarantee-related issues in North Andhra districts by speaking directly to the State Level Bankers’ Committee Convener during the review. He instructed banks to provide uniform bank guarantees across the State so that farmers do not face inconvenience. Emphasising the Speed of Delivering Governance approach, he warned millers against any irregularities in procurement.

Despite financial constraints, the State government has extended ₹184 crore in subsidies to support mango farmers and is paying an additional ₹4 per kg, a benefit not offered by any other State, the Chief Minister said. He urged pulp processing units to act responsibly and support farmers, warning of strict action against anyone deliberately causing losses to mango growers.

Mr. Naidu directed District Collectors to resolve farmers’ grievances within 10 days. He pointed out that farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are compelled to sell mangoes at prevailing market prices, while Andhra Pradesh is providing incentives to protect its growers. The government, he said, is working to develop a strong ecosystem for Totapuri mango farmers by bringing in more food processing units and has instructed officials to organise a horticulture products exhibition in January.
